Mrs. Pearl, who survived a pogrom against Iraqi Jews in her youth, helped establish a foundation in memory of her son, a Wall Street Journal reporter abducted and beheaded by Islamic militants in Pakistan in 2002.

The fall of Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city and the former headquarters of the Taliban movement, in the south to the insurgents in the early hours of Friday was followed by the swift retreat of government forces from at least six other provincial capitals. These stunning, and rapid, victories have brought the insurgents to 40 km from the national capital, Kabul.
