The United States and a group of Western countries including Germany, France and Britain have expressed concern over reported killings and disappearances of former members of the Afghan security forces after the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in August.

The fall of Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city and the former headquarters of the Taliban movement, in the south to the insurgents in the early hours of Friday was followed by the swift retreat of government forces from at least six other provincial capitals. These stunning, and rapid, victories have brought the insurgents to 40 km from the national capital, Kabul.
