China says no unusual pathogens found after WHO queries respiratory outbreaks

Chinese health authorities have provided data on an increase in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children, stating that no unusual or novel pathogens have been detected. The World Health Organization (WHO) had requested this information after reports from the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED) mentioned undiagnosed pneumonia in children in north China. The increase in respiratory illnesses is believed to be linked to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens like mycoplasma pneumoniae.
